Why Do Race Cars Have Smooth Tires?

October 14th, 2022 by

Formula One racing cars have a different style of tires than the ones you’re probably used to getting for your car. They are made from unique polymer compounds and particulate carbon. This raises the stability and grip to top performance levels for these extremely powerful vehicles that are trying to hit record acceleration times. Race cars also have smooth, treadless tires to increase grip and aid the vehicle in charging ahead.

Although a modern passenger car, truck, or SUV will never need smooth racetrack tires and wouldn’t perform effectively with them, you can find the right fitting set of tires at our store, part of our extensive automotive service department in Boardman, Ohio. Check out this guide for more information on why race cars have smooth tires, and visit the Sweeney Buick GMC tire shop to help equip your car with everything it needs.

When you think of tires, you probably think of them having thick, jagged treads. Most people know or have heard that short treads are a sign that your tires are worn down and need to be replaced. For example, the penny test can help determine what the tread depth of the average car, truck, or SUV’s tires should be.

However, racing tires are not made to ride up and down on-ramps or be driven around the flawed roads of a suburban neighborhood, and they are certainly not meant to be taken off the pavement. They have no treads and an extra-wide, low shape suited to rolling forward. As a result, they have a perfectly smooth contact patch with no treads. To understand why smooth Formula One tires are so different, let’s quickly clarify why other tires have treads.

Understanding Tire Treads and Racing

Treads are grooves along the part of the tire that touches the ground. Their main purpose is to capture water instead of letting it hydroplane against the rubber, helping prevent slips over wet roads or puddles. The same is true of mud, ice, and just about anything else that might cause a tire to slip. Even in perfect weather on dry roads, treads are important for safe and effective driving. Most cars will have their ability to stop and handle hard turns compromised if they don’t have recommended or original-equivalent tires and wheels.

Most time-trial-testing cars only ever drive in a straight line. High-performance, professional racing tires aren’t expected to turn often, roll comfortably or safely on everyday roads, stop at low speeds, or deal with water. Instead, they need maximum traction running in a straight line on dry, smooth, high-contact pavement. Since turning is not a typical concern, the tires can afford to be thicker, which means more traction between the vehicle and the road, and thus more forward motion in less time.

Why Can’t Passenger Cars Have Smooth Tires?

The faster a car is going, the faster the wheels are spinning and the more momentum the car has to deal with. It’s easy to wonder that if race car tires are smooth because it gives them more traction, and more traction is safer, why don’t passenger cars ditch the treads? The main reason is the rubber of modern tires, which is much more practical to produce but needs grooves to avoid slipping.

We started with the question why do race cars have smooth tires? Most people generally understand the purpose that tire treads serve, and it’s an important one. The key difference is that the tires on passenger cars are made of soft, slippery rubber that highly benefits from tread cuts. This is very different to the super-compact polymer that’s designed for high-speed traction.

For the same reasons that these tires are so good at what they do, smooth Formula One tires are not effective for daily driving. The smoother a tire’s surface, the more traction it will have on dry, consistent pavement, but the less grip it will have on anything else.

What Are the Different Types of Car Tires?

If you have a sports car or are thinking of getting one, the kind of treadless tires used by top-level racing vehicles are not a good idea. Although both are technically designed around performance, the two definitions of high-performance driving are very different. Depending on your vehicle, you’re better off choosing from one of these categories of passenger-car tires:

  • All-season tires provide smooth highway driving and are suited for all general, non-extreme weather conditions and climates. They’re the most common type found on cars today.
  • Summer tires are similar to all-season ones, but their tread grip and other factors are customized for optimal performance in warmer weather. If you live in an area with snow or a season that gets significantly colder, you may want to look into winter tires, which are the other side of the same coin.
  • Touring tires include summer touring tires, all-season touring tires, and so on. The term refers to tires that have more performance-boosting effects at high speeds and heavier driving maneuvers.
  • Performance tires are similar to the touring type, but they combine their benefits with proper anti-slip tread grooves. Give performance tires a look if you like a pleasant driving experience and the benefits of all-season designs.

Smooth Formula One tires have their purpose, which is to provide increased direct traction with flat pavement, generating more force from a stop and moving the car as fast as possible. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to fit or use those kinds of tires on a regular passenger vehicle and nor would they be safe, mostly due to their lack of treads. As a reminder, if you think your current tire treads have gotten low, check out our tire store or schedule an appointment with our general service center.
