The GX is available in three trim levels: the base Preferred, Select, and the range-topping Essence. All three models offer the same engine, transmission, and drivetrain options, but they vary in terms of features. A front-wheel-drive model uses a continuously variable transmission, whereas an all-wheel-drive version gets a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Encore, on the other hand, offers only one powertrain option, which is a 155-horsepower 1.4-liter turbo-four that pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission.
When it comes to fuel economy, the Encore GX has an upper hand over the older Encore. This Buick model returns 29/31 mpg (city/highway) with the base engine and front-wheel drive and 29/32 mpg with the larger engine and front-wheel drive. These ratings are excellent for a subcompact SUV. In contrast, the Encore earns only 24/32 mpg with front-wheel drive.
Both the Buick Encore GX and Encore boast a stylish and upscale cabin that uses a generous amount of premium-quality materials. They also provide roomier and more comfortable seats than most of their competitors. However, the Encore GX has a larger cargo area, which maxes out at 50.2 cubic feet with the back seats folded. That’s slightly more than its smaller brother’s maximum capacity of 48.4 cubic feet.
