What Is the History of Buick?

Buick is one of the most recognizable names in the auto industry due to its rich and exciting history. Initially calling it Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company, David Dunbar Buick established the Buick Company in 1899 as an internal combustion engine manufacturer.

The Early Years of Buick

David Buick was born in Arbroath, Scotland, in 1854 and was brought to Detroit when he was two years old. He was a plumbing executive and inventor in the 1880s but became interested in gasoline engines around the 1890s, and soon he started making engines for boats and farm use.

Soon David Buick changed the company name to Buick Manufacturing Company, then to Buick Motor Company in 1903 in Detroit, Michigan. During this period, his associates made two cars, one as early as 1899, and designed the overhead valve engine. Eugene Richard engineered this powerful and efficient engine. Before Richard was engineer Walter Marr who left because the owner David Buick was reluctant to begin making automobiles.

Flint’s Contribution

Despite a new engine, Buick barely made progress, and in September 1903, David Buick and his financial backer Benjamin Briscoe sold control of the company to a group of wagon makers in Flint, 60 miles north of Detroit. James H. Whiting, the manager of Flint Wagon Works, announced the intention to move the company to Flint, Michigan, and Richard stayed behind. David Buick stayed on as a manager and rehired Marr as chief engineer to begin making automobiles in production.

By May 1904, the company had built its first Flint Buick. By the end of 1904, the company had made 37 cars before it started running into financial difficulties, and Whiting decided to seek help from one of Flint’s close associates.

Success and Birth of General Motors

The person who came in to help was William C. Durant, who was considered a Flint carriage king but didn’t like automobiles. However, he got attracted by how the Buick could climb hills and run through mud effortlessly like no other car he’d ever seen. That’s when he decided to switch, raised the needed money, and organized big shows that made sales. Buick soon became the most prominent car maker in America.

With production totaling 8,000 and Buick’s success, Durant started a holding company in 1908 called General Motors. The holding company started by pulling Buick, Cadillac, and Oakland.

Durant’s finances became stretched as he had 30 companies under the General Motors umbrella, and he lost control of General Motors to a financial group in 1910. He went back and built the Chevrolet Company with Louis Chevrolet the following year. As Chevrolet developed, Durant regained control of General Motors from 1915 to 1916.

What Is Buick Known For?

Since its first production, Buick has evolved in many ways. By the end of 2012, Buick had sold more than 24 million vehicles. Buick also has a long motorsports history, giving great performances on race tracks since early 1908.

Buick had operated as an official pace car of the Indianapolis 500 six times, and the brand won two NASCAR Manufacturer’s Championships in 1981 and 1982.

Buick models are affordable luxury vehicles. After WWI, the automaker made some of the most iconic models. These include the Roadmaster, Regal, Super, LeSabre, Riviera, Skylark, and the unparalleled 1955 Buick Special.
