What is GMC AT4 Package?

September 4th, 2024 by

When you go to buy a truck or SUV, you eventually come to the phase where you need to decide what trim to get. Each trim level of a truck or SUV adds new features or upgrades. By going through the trim levels, you can determine how much you want to spend and which features come with your new vehicle. If you’re looking to get a truck or SUV because you want something that can go off-road, then you may want a trim that caters specifically to this need. If so, then you’ll want to learn more about the AT4 trim from GMC.

What is the AT4 Trim?

While the AT4 package was initially introduced in 2019 as an available package on the Sierra pickup truck, its popularity made it expand to become available across nearly the entire GMC lineup. It was a more premium trim and fell between the SLT and Denali versions. Now, the AT4 trim is available on other vehicles besides the Sierra 1500.

The purpose of the AT4 trim is to give off-road enthusiasts everything they’re looking for in a vehicle. For example, the AT4 trim might come with a special grille, heated and ventilated front seats, rear floor liners, the ability to add a bike rack, suspension upgrades, and even a special driving mode called Terrain Mode. By adding these extra features to their other vehicles, GMC has made more of its lineup ready to go offroad.

GMC’s Off-Roading Package

GMC AT4 Offroading Tires

The AT4 package is GMC’s ultimate off-road add-on. AT4 stands for “All-Terrain 4WD” so you can rest assured that all vehicles with the AT4 package are either four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. However, being off-road-ready means much more than having four-wheel drive capabilities. AT4 SUVs and trucks include features such as a specialized suspension system to enhance stability and control and all-terrain tires to help you overcome any road condition.

Noteworthy and eye-catching features of trucks equipped with the AT4 package are the bright red tow hooks under the front bumper, ready to aid in the event of a recovery. You’ll also find skid plates to protect the vehicle’s underbody when driving on gravel, mud, or dirt. Improved ground clearance is also a standard feature, making traveling over rough or uneven terrain easier than ever.

The AT4 package is about combining off-road capabilities with luxury, so in addition to the aforementioned features designed to help make off-road adventures a breeze, the AT4 package also includes several upscale touches to really take your drive to the next level. For example, you’ll find available front and rear underbody high-definition cameras to give you an up-close look at the action from all angles.

The AT4 package includes distinct aesthetic features as well, making it clear from a glance that your vehicle is equipped with this unique package. On the exterior, you’ll find black chrome accents and a distinct AT4-specific grille. Inside, you’ll find a jet black interior with heated and ventilated perforated front leather seats.

AT4 Technology

GMC utilizes the latest technology features to help make the AT4 package the ultimate package for off-road driving. The standard Hill Descent Control uses anti-lock braking technology to provide a smooth, controlled descent on uneven surfaces or trails without the need for the driver to repeatedly push the brake pedal. The Traction Select System is designed to boost confidence when driving in bad weather or off-road. Drivers can easily switch between standard all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, and off-road modes while driving, enabling them to choose the best setting for current road conditions.

The AT4 package includes a selection of driving modes to help you stay in control no matter what the road conditions look like. These driving modes include tour mode, which is best for everyday use; terrain mode, designed for low-speed, mild off-roading; mud mode, designed to keep traction when driving in mud; sand mode, which helps stay in control on the beach or other sandy locations; snow mode, designed for snowy or icy conditions; sport mode, designed for terrain that changes during your drive; and tow/haul mode, which helps when using your vehicle with towing.

The Sierra also comes with the MultiPro tailgate, which delivers added functionality to the rear of your truck depending on the situation. Some other available features include a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, plenty of under-the-seat storage and a Bose premium sound system.

GMC Canyon AT4

Despite its smaller size, this truck is still capable of towing up to 7700 lbs thanks to its powerful V6 engine. With the AT4 trim of the GMC Canyon, you’ll also get reliable 31-inch wheels and a unique suspension system, making it great for going off-road. Some interior features on this model include an elevated rear-seat for improved comfort, an easy-to-use infotainment center and a forward-collision warning.

GMC Acadia AT4

The GMC Acadia AT4 is another SUV with three rows of seating. In terms of size, the Acadia falls somewhere between the smaller GMC Terrain and the larger GMC Yukon. The Acadia offers a very comfortable ride with some great interior technology features – like the infotainment center – making this a great SUV for families. If you want an SUV that’s great for running errands on the weekend, while also being able to handle some off-roading, then you should strongly consider getting the GMC Acadia AT4.

GMC Terrain AT4

Finally, there’s the GMC Terrain AT4, which is the smallest SUV of the above options. If you’ve driven a GMC Terrain in the past, you’ll notice this year’s model looks a little different, with reshaped headlights and a different front fascia. There are some great features included as standard with this vehicle, including a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and sport terrain tires. You also have the option of getting high definition surround vision and a heads-up display. Finally, as a smaller SUV, this model gets great gas mileage (25/28 MPG city/highway) and is typically more affordable than some of the other models above.

The Yukon also has three rows of seats with plenty of space for all your passengers, making this a great vehicle for families. As for interior features, some of the available options include a power-sliding center console, a large infotainment screen and a premium sound system.

What’s the AT4X?

As the AT4 package has grown in popularity, the demand for even more off-road-focused vehicles has also expanded. GMC’s AT4X package includes front and rear electronic locking differentials, more aggressive tires, multimatic DSSV dampers, and increased ground clearance. The AT4X is designed for drivers who really plan to put their vehicle to the test and conquer a multitude of terrains and conditions.

AT4X vs. AT4X AEV

In addition to the AT4X package, drivers also have the option of the AEV, or American Expedition Vehicles, edition. The AT4X and the AT4X AEV edition are both rugged and capable off-road vehicles, but the AEV edition comes with several unique features and modifications that further enhance its off-road performance and durability compared to the standard AT4X model.

One of the key modifications made by AEV is the addition of a high-quality suspension system, which includes specially tuned shocks, springs, and other components designed to improve off-road capability and ride comfort. The AEV edition also features larger all-terrain tires, which provide better traction and improved ground clearance compared to the standard AT4X. The AEV edition includes unique exterior modifications such as a redesigned front bumper with an integrated winch mount, heavy-duty skid plates for underbody protection, and auxiliary lighting for improved visibility during off-road expeditions.

Furthermore, the AEV edition also comes with interior enhancements such as upgraded seating and custom storage solutions to provide a more comfortable and functional off-road experience. Overall, the AT4X AEV edition stands out with its off-road-focused modifications and enhancements, making it a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking superior off-road performance and durability.

Which GMC Vehicle is Right for You?

As you can see, there are plenty of GMC options available if you want something that can go off-road thanks to the new AT4 trim. However, it’s likely that one of these vehicles is a better fit for you than the others. To determine which SUV is right for you, you’ll want to ask yourself some key questions, such as:

  • How many passenger seats do I need?
