9 Parks in Austintown, Ohio to Try

August 16th, 2020 by

Visiting a local park is a great way to get outside for exercise, relaxation, or quality family time. Fortunately, if you live in or around Austintown, there are a lot of great options for parks to visit.

Local government organizations like the Austintown Township Parks System do their best to provide an abundance of recreational facilities and opportunities focused on helping people appreciate the natural environment. Many of these parks offer a balance of fields and courts for recreational activities as well as playgrounds and hiking trails.

Here are nine of our favorite parks to visit.

9-11 Memorial Park

Located in Austintown, the 9-11 Memorial Park is dedicated to the memory of the people who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. By taking the paths through the park, visitors are led to the remnants of the World Trade Center beams, an urn that contains dirt from the Flight 93 crash site, and stone taken from the Pentagon. In addition to the Memorial, the 14-acre park is home to several youth ball fields. Running through the park is the Axe Factory Run Stream.

If you want to head to the park for some outdoor recreation, then Township Park in Austintown is the place to go. This 220-acre park has a variety of recreational opportunities, including tennis courts, basketball courts, a sand volleyball court, baseball fields, horseshoe pits, and an 18,000-square-foot PlayQuest playground area. There are also several other small playground areas for the kids to enjoy.

If you enjoy live music, head to the park every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., weather permitting, for the Summer Concerts in the Park series. The concert series begins in late May or early June and last until the end of August.

Township Park is also a great option if you want to get your dog out of the house for some exercise. There is a spacious fenced area with separate sections for large dogs and small ones of up to 25 pounds. In addition to offering plenty of room to run, there is also agility equipment as well as an obstacle course if you want to work on some dog training during your visit.

Mosquito Lake Dog Park

If you’re looking to get out of the house with your dog, you should visit Mosquito Lake Dog Park in Cortland. This fully-fenced-in dog park consists of five acres of wooded space and is divided to accommodate both small and large dogs. Shade trees and branches are available for visitors to sit under and relax while the dogs get some exercise, and Fido will have access to water for both drinking and swimming. Just make sure you remember the towel before heading out the door, as there’s a very strong chance you’ll come back with a wet dog.

Mill Creek Metroparks

Mill Creek Park was established in 1891, and the entire Metro Parks area, located in Youngstown, is comprised of 4,500 acres, with over 2,600 of those acres allocated for Mill Creek Park. Visitors to the park can enjoy boating, fishing, picnicking, biking, golf, and tennis. During the winter months, park visitors can partake in sledding or cross country skiing. Some of the facilities within the Metro Parks include:

  • Judge Morley Performing Arts Pavilion
  • Fellows Riverside Gardens
  • James L. Wick, Jr. Recreation Area
  • Mill Creek Golf Course
  • D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center

Wedgewood Park

This 17-acre neighborhood park is a great option if you’re looking for a playground for young kids, a place to throw around a baseball with friends, or just a place to go on a quiet walk by yourself. Visitors to the Youngstown park can find playground equipment, a ball field, and a natural area that hosts a portion of the Axe Factory Run Stream as well as a habitat of wildlife.

Greenbriar Park

Located in Youngstown, Greenbriar Park is a great option if you would like to get the kids out of the house for a few hours of activity and possibly even a picnic lunch. The five-acre park offers a variety of kinds of playground equipment as well as some picnic tables where you can sit back and enjoy some time outside.

Veteran’s Memorial Park

Veteran’s Memorial Park in Austintown is just a small two-acre park. However, with a beautiful wooden gazebo with benches as well as memorials that have been erected by different veterans’ organizations, it provides a great place to go to relax and enjoy a few moments of solitude.

Boardman Park

A short distance to the southeast in Boardman is Boardman Park. This 227-acre park is in the heart of Boardman Township and offers a wide range of activities that are fun for everyone. If you’re in the mood to get some exercise, enjoy a round of tennis, participate in a game of pickleball or volleyball, or head over to the bocce courts or ball field. There is also a nine-hole disc golf course if that’s more your thing.

The young kids will enjoy the Kids Town and Tots’ Town playgrounds. There are also hiking and biking trails if you want to get out in the woods. During the winter months, visitors to the park can enjoy the outdoor ice skating rink. In the summer, there is a Music in the Park series at the amphitheater on Thursdays.

Marge Hartman’s Paws Town

This is a members-only park located in Boardman Park. However, because vet records are required for all of the animals, you can feel confident that all of your dog’s new friends are properly vaccinated. Freshwater fountains are available at three levels for both owners and dogs. There’s also a dog wash station and available waste bags that make cleaning up after your dog easy.

As you can see, there is no shortage of options if you’re searching for a park to enjoy in or around Austintown. Whether you’re in the mood for a round of golf, want to get the kids out of the house, or need to take your dog on a walk, there’s a park with a little of something for everyone.
