2024 Buick Encore GX vs Honda CR-V

March 6th, 2024 by

Two popular SUV choices for drivers each year are the Buick Encore GX and the Honda CR-V. 2024 looks to be no different, as both models are about to release their best versions yet. We’ll compare these two models across key categories to help you decide which model better fits your needs.

2024 Buick Encore vs. 2024 Honda CR-V: Interior Space

2024 Encore GX Red

Both the 2024 Buick Encore GX and the 2024 Honda CR-V offer spacious and comfortable cabins. For the Buick, you’ll get 92 cubic feet of passenger volume in total, with 50 cubic feet in the front and 42 cubic feet in the rear. There’s also ample amounts of cargo space, with 24 cubic feet of volume behind the rear seats. If you fold down the rear seats, you can expand your cargo area to 50 cubic feet. This should be enough space for your typical weekend errands or short getaways.

As for the 2024 Honda CR-V, the interior is a little larger. With the CR-V, you’ll get 104 cubic feet of passenger volume, significantly more than the Buick Encore GX. There’s also more cargo space, coming in at 36 cubic feet. Therefore, if you typically have taller passengers or if you need an SUV with more cargo space, you’ll likely prefer the Honda CR-V.

2024 Encore GX vs. 2024 CR-V: Performance and Fuel Efficiency

Under the hood of the 2024 GX, you can find one of two engine options. The standard engine is a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that produces 137 horsepower. If you opt for the 1.3-liter engine, you’ll get a boost in horsepower up to 155. Whichever engine you select, it will pair with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive on the base models. You also have the option of upgrading to all-wheel drive (AWD), which will then pair with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Which configuration you select will then determine your fuel efficiency. The base options deliver 30 mpg on the highway, while the 1.3-liter gets 31 mpg. If you add AWD to the 1.3-liter, estimates drop to 29 mpg. With only a small difference between the setups, we highly recommend exploring the more powerful 1.3-liter configuration.

As for the 2024 Honda CR-V, there are again a few powertrain options available. The standard setup uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 190 horsepower and pairs with a CVT and either front-wheel drive or AWD. You’ll find this setup on the LX, EX, and EX-L trims. On the Sport and Sport Touring trims, you’ll instead get a hybrid powertrain. This powertrain uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to produce 204 horsepower. The Sport trim can come with either front-wheel drive or AWD, but the Sport Touring comes standard with AWD.

While both powertrains deliver strong fuel efficiency, the hybrid is the preferred choice here. The standard setup gives you around  28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, while the front-wheel drive hybrid provides 43 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. So if you’re looking for a more powerful or fuel-efficient SUV, you’ll likely want to explore the Honda CR-V.

2024 Buick Encore GX vs. 2024 Honda CR-V: Comfort and Entertainment

Both the 2024 Buick Encore and the 2024 Honda CR-V come with modern features to make your driving experience more enjoyable. Standard features on the 2024 Buick Encore include premium upholstery, an 11-inch ultrawide infotainment display, a panoramic moonroof, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integrations, and a power liftgate. Available upgrades for this model include a wireless smartphone charging station and an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot.

With the 2024 Honda CR-V, you’ll get the following standard features: heated front seats, a 7-inch infotainment screen (9-inch models available), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in navigation, and some USB-C ports for rear-seat charging capabilities. Honda also designed the front seats to reduce driver fatigue, making the CR-V a good choice if you plan on taking long road trips. Available upgrades for the CR-V include a premium 12-speaker Bose audio system and a one-touch power moonroof.

Comparing Safety Features

The 2024 Buick Encore received an overall safety rating from the NHTSA of five stars largely because of its numerous standard safety and driver-assistance features. The standard safety features include automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist, while additional features, such as adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system, are available as upgrades.

The 2024 Honda CR-V hasn’t received a safety rating from the NHTSA yet, but it will likely perform well, since it offers many of the same features as the Encore. It comes standard with forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a driver-attention monitor.

Trims and MSRPs

A big factor when considering any vehicle is the price. The 2024 Buick Encore GX and the 2024 Honda CR-V come in several trim options at different price levels, making it easier to find one that suits your needs. The available trims for the 2024 Buick Encore GX include:

  • 2024 Buick Encore GX Preferred: $25,600.
  • 2024 Buick Encore GX Sport Touring: $26,800.
  • 2024 Buick Encore GX Avenir: $31,900.

The 2024 Honda CR-V offers six trim levels, which are:

  • 2024 Honda CR-V LX: $29,500.
  • 2024 Honda CR-V EX: $32,010.
  • 2024 Honda CR-V Sport Hybrid: $33,350.
  • 2024 Honda CR-V EX-L: $34,660.
  • 2024 Honda CR-V Sport-L Hybrid: $36,350.
  • 2024 Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid: $39,500.

As you can see, the 2024 Encore is generally more affordable than the Honda CR-V. However, the Honda CR-V also offers a more spacious cabin, better fuel efficiency, and stronger features. Therefore, you’ll have to decide if the improved driving experience of the 2024 Honda CR-V is worth the additional cost.
