2023 GMC Hummer EV vs. Rivian R1T: Overview

Though relatively new, the GMC Hummer and Rivian R1T have set the standards for electric trucks very high. These massive trucks are big-dollar investments that many other automakers will struggle to beat. Neither model has reliability ratings from the popular rating platforms as they’re still new.

Trim Levels

The GMC Hummer comes in three trim levels: Hummer EV2, EV3, and EV3X. However, the EV2 won’t be available for sale until 2024.

The 2023 Rivian R1T has two trim levels: Explore and Adventure. The Adventure trim adds several unique features, such as heated and ventilated front seats, a Meridian stereo system, wood interior trim, and fancier upholstery.

Power and Performance

The GMC Hummer EV pickup truck currently has a tri-motor setup with one motor up front and two in the rear that delivers 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. The all-wheel drive is standard, and thanks to the Watts to Freedom launch control driving mode, the Hummer EV can rocket to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds. The Rivian R1T is a performance truck with an electric all-wheel-drive system. However, this system comes in two different configurations: dual-motor and quad-motor. The dual motor produces 600 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, while the quad motor makes 835 horsepower and 980 lb-ft of torque. Like the Hummer, the R1T can sprint to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The GMC Hummer uses GM’s new Ultium battery pack technology that boasts an estimated 329 miles of driving range. It uses an 800-volt electrical architecture with a 350 kWh fast-charging ability that can add up to 100 miles of range in 10 minutes. If you don’t have any DC fast charging options near you, you can still charge your Hummer EV at home via a provided adapter or at regular public charging terminals.

The charging duration depends on the method you choose. When using DC fast charging station Level 3 with 350 kWh capacity, it’ll take you only 10 minutes to recoup to 100 miles of charge. The 240-volt outlet or Level 2 public charging station takes 16 to 24 hours, depending on the power supply. It’s tough to predict how long the GM’s battery will last, but there’s an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty.

The 2023 Rivian R1T has three different battery packs. The standard pack provides 260 miles per charge. The larger battery boats 314 miles per charge, while the Max battery gets 400 miles per charge. You can charge your Rivian R1T at a public charging station or at your home.

These Level 3 chargers allow you to recoup up to 140 miles of range in as little as 20 minutes. Since the Rivian is an all-new EV, it’s hard to predict how long the battery will last. However, there’s an eight-year/175,000-mile warranty.

Hauling Ability

The GMC Hummer can tow up to 7,500 pounds. That’s sufficient to cover all your towing needs, such as hauling a ski boat or a midsized trailer.

The Rivian can tow up to 11,000 pounds, the highest capacity among compact pickup trucks, surpassing several full-size pickup trucks.

Off-Road Capability

Hummer has always been known for its extraordinary off-roading abilities. The Hummer EV boasts an impressive 13 inches of suspension travel and 16 inches of ground clearance. The massive 35-inch tires offer the needed grip on loose or slippery surfaces. It also has a torque vectoring system that channels power to any wheel with the most traction.

The Rivian R1T is also a proficient off-roader with air suspension that articulates nicely across rough terrain. It maintains traction and moves swiftly with its substantial 14.9 inches of ground clearance. Its flat reinforced underbody minimizes the risk of snagging a rock or stump when navigating trails.
